Earlier this month, Trumpet had the honor of being recognized by Bob Veres' Inside Information as an exemplary operations organization in a 4-page article he wrote about our operations team.
The article discusses how we measure efficiency in our operations team and how we build it through strategic hiring practices.
Here are 3 main takeaways from the article:
- Don't be afraid to add a lot of detail or specifications to your job position. This encourages the people who aren't a great fit to weed themselves out - saving us significant time and money. We don't get 200 applications for each job; actually, it's closer to 20, but those few are much more qualified than the 180 that might have applied had we not been specific enough.
- Implement a regular evaluation system. How do you evaluate an employee that's not directly bringing money into the company? We use a Big 3 method, where we outline the top 3 most important functions on each role and specify SMART goals around them. Each quarter, we are evaluated on whether or not we hit our Big 3 goals.
- Always getting better. This is actually one of our core values. We encourage celebrations of successes and mistakes, and take both opportunities to learn and decide how it could have gone better (or even better, in the case of a success). We also have a forum that allows us to post ideas for how we can improve, both internally, throughout processes, and externally, through out work and communication with clients, vendors, and partners.
